Saw Pirates of the Caribeean yesterday. Liked it a lot, would have loved it when I was twelve.
Johnny Depp was fabulous and Orlando Bloom is not only a very, very pretty man, he is also a decent actor. (I think he was quite good as “straight man” to Johnny’s insane Captain Jack in a couple of scenes.)
Depp, Bloom and Knightley are currently my casting choices for that dark twisted, remake of the original Star Wars-triology I have been making in my head for the better part of the last decade.
The pirates also made me remember Erica Jong’s novel Fanny. I read it an eternity ago, but as far as I can remember it contained a lot of elements that can also be found in fanfiction, like:
* A heroine who is a foundling, has long red hair and dark eyes, is talented, smart, so beautiful that everyone falls in love (or at least lust) with her and can successfully impersonate a man.
* Hot men who love each other, and express said love by sleeping toghether.
* Real people smut. (Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift and William Hogarth, as far as I can remember. Not together, though.)
* Lots and lots of literary allusions.
* Incest.
It also has witches, highwaymen and lots of kinky sex in it. (It is my "unofficial sex education book" - and the only book I can remember that my mum forbid me to read, but I read it in secret anyway.) I almost feel like re-reading it, but maybe it is the kind of book who only should live in your memory.
