Saw At Worlds End yesterday.
Short version: It's a visually stunning movie, and pretty funny at times. Plot- and character-wise, it' sadly a lot weaker than it could have been. I'm not really disappointed, but I understand why people who has been seriously fannish about the franchise are.
Random stuff:
* There are some lovely work from the actors here; mainly from Geoffrey Rush who almost steals the movie, but I also loved Naomie Harris, who has an amazing screen presence, Johnny Depp, Kevin McNally, Jonathan Pryce and Jack Davenport. Knightley and Bloom are still preternaturally pretty and quite enjoyable (though I was distracted by her perfect make-up for most of the movie. And by her very blond hair.)
* The Chinese were this movies "ethnic group that come across as a not particularly nice and a bit stupid". Meh.
* Governor Swann's encounter with Elizabeth after his death was the only scene that had any real emotional impact on me; both because of E's shock and grief and because it made me feel how very, very far everyone had travelled since the beginning of the first movie.
* Norrington's arc wasn't really that bad in and by itself (at least considering that I believe that he was the character the writers never really knew what to do with), but it was way to rushed. Loved his last meeting with Elizabeth, though.
* Did Davy Jones betray Calypso before she stood him up on a date or after? Never got that.
* I hate Becket and his annoying henchman, and not in a good way. They couldn't die soon enough for me.
* Loved that Elizabeh and Will actually got married during the battle.
* I'm a bit sorry that Will didn't get tentacles.
* I was spoiled for the after-credits scene and I'm glad I was for otherwise the next to last E&W-scene would have driven me nuts. "Bye honey, have a nice decade on this rocky beach! Hope you're not pregnant or anything. Though that would be cool. Anyway, gotta go, see you around!" Yes, I know she had a boat but her standing on that beach with no plan about where to go next just felt off. The last scene is Will's ideal ending rather than Elizabeth's (or, their son got what I suspect was kid! Will's happy ending; he's standing with his mother, who is alive and strong and beautiful, and his father is coming home from the sea), but well...she could have been a pirate for eight years before she bought some stylish get comfortable skirts and settled down in England or where ever that was supposed to be.
They could absolutely do a free-standing sequel with Depp and Rush. If they do, I hope they have the sense to try to get Zoƫ Saldana back.
