Merlin 2x09

So, I guess Merlin-the-character hit puberty this week.
This could have been an interesting episode, but was rather boring (dear PTB, I know that the show's name is Merlin, but you have a good ensemble use it). I liked the very, very slight hint that Freya might return in some form one day, though.

About the trailer, and from the department of unrepentant, if slightly unhinged Gwen-love: If ”jealous Gwen” in next episode comes across as she thinks that one kiss and a couple of sad glances means that Arthur is never, ever allowed to love another woman I will 1. Blame the writers, 2. Blame the writers, 3. Blame the writers and 4. Grudgingly admit that my girl needs a bit of a reality check.

Still, I don't think she "deserves" to feel jealousy just to "even the score" because she made Arthur pout in 2x04. For one, Arthur's response to that was more jerkish[?] than it had to be, and as for cosmic punishment her father was killed, Lancelot left her in the woods, her BFF Morgana is MIA half of the time, she and Merlin only have meaningful interaction every fifth episode or so this season, her father was killed...(yes, I know that happened before the Arthur thing began, but in my book that means she doesn't need to have any cosmic punishment handed to her for at least two seasons.)

Other Arthuriana: Read the Lancelot/Elaine of C. bits in Mallory's Morte D'Arthur and then in White's The Ill-made Knight for comparison, and while Mallory is skeevy as hell, White's treatment of the female characters hurts more, because he has pity for them, and a bit of sympathy and sometimes a bit of grudging admiration, but he doesn't like them, and it shows.

To end on a happier note, here's the once and future Dumbledore serenading Vanessa Redgrave about the wonders of Camelot.

Your thoughts on Gwen make me feel like less of a crazy person, just so you know.

I will ABSOLUTELY blame the writers to the last, and then perhaps admit that Gwen needs to calm down. But it really depends on the context; who knows how it'll all play out/how Arthur will be treating people who are not Vivian.

But to the people who say she deserves some suffering after 2x04, I say: you mean apart from HER OWN SUFFERING in 2x04? Apart from the fact that her life story so far is about loss, loneliness, and having to go to work every day and curtsey at the man who killed her father? WHATEVER, FANDOM, WHATEVER.

I do like the idea of Gwen showing a spark of emotion on her own behalf for once, though. That makes me very happy, jealousy or not. And her feeling a bit bruised and miffed is natural even if she ends up needing some perspective.
