Merlin 3x01: The tears of Uther Pendragon
My show is back!
My girl Guinevere, not so much, sadly enough. Seriously, it felt like they had taken some Gwen-footage from series 2 and thrown it in at random intervals. Grrrr. Please, please, please give this woman a peasant rebellion to run or something. Anything.
Apart from this - very enjoyable episode! While there are problems with Evil Morgana on a “what is the show trying to say, really”-level, on a superficial level she’s great fun to watch. I especially liked her scenes with Uther (Either he fancies her, or he’s her biological father. Both scenarios has possibilities, as far as I’m concerned.), and with Merlin ("He’s already here" – best M&M moment EVER.).
Arthur – Merlin banter: Good in the beginning, when it felt like an old routine they were going through to keep their spirits up, annoying later. (They really needed two scenes with Arthur being a complete prat?) Prediction about the far off future though: when Merlin gets stuck in that cave (except he won’t!), Arthur will try to make Gwen, and the Knights of the Round Table, and random servants, and some of his enemies, tease him about how lazy and ignorant he is. It will never quite be the same.
Ghost boy rather looked like at tiny Merlin, which heightened the eeriness of that scene. Yes Uther, you are a crappy king who does bad things, let’s not forget about that, even if the good guys are still working for you.
Love Morgana and Morgause and their sisterly and not-so-sisterly bonding. Though if the latter stays around for a while it would be interesting to see Morgana starting to question her and act on her own.
Morgause/Cendred – that was hot. And funny. There will be fanfic Y/N? (Cendred is the guy who rules over Ealdor, right? Not that I think it will matter, I just want to keep those random neighboring kings apart.)
Being a knight or guard in Camelot must be the suckiest job ever. Unless your Sir Leon, in which case it’s “well, like every job it has it’s downsides, but I do get free wine!”. Seriously, are there any sons of noblemen left in the country by now?
I’m a bit torn about the use of Kilgarah: while Merlin hasn’t seen him for a year in the show’s universe, it feels like they cannot let go of the “when everything else fails, ask the dragon”-formula.
